"We will withhold the latest payments to the company, contracted to remove snow from Sofia's Tsarigradsko Chaussee Blvd, because of the poor results that our inspectors noticed yesterday, Jan 10th," Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova said this morning.
"The contract between the Sofia Municipality and the snow removal company stipulates that payments are due only when there is proof of completed amount of work," she added.
"The Sofia Municipality is not paying for last night's work of the company, because the results were below the required minimum," Mrs. Fandakova went on to say.
Almost all of the inner streets in Sofia's residential districts are covered in thick snow and are barely passable. They are hardly likely to see a snowplow this winter.
The snow removal companies in Sofia are struggling to clear the city's boulevards and main crossroads, but their efforts hardly match the snowfalls' intensity.
Schools in Sofia will most probably remain closed for another day or two.
