Bulgaria's high jumper Mirela Demireva, who won a silver medal at the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, has been declared the country's best athlete for 2016.
She received her medal from Stefka Kostadinova, chairperson of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee and high jump world record holder, at a glamorous ceremony at Sofia's National Palace of Cultue. Kostadinova's world record of 2.09 metres has stood since 1987.
"I see myself in Mirela. I know that my record will be broken one day and I'd be happy if she is the one to break it," Kostadinova said.
"Since I was very young, I have always wanted to break the high jump world record one day. I am very grateful to my trainers and my family for letting me follow my dream," Demireva said.
