German MPs nominate Angela Merkel for Nobel Peace Prize over Ukraine peace efforts

German MPs have nominated Angela Merkel for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine through the signing of a second ceasefire deal last week in Minsk was dubbed 'a huge success' by members of her Christian Democratic Party. Karl-Georg Wellman chairs the German-Ukrainian parliamentary group in the Bunderstag. He said the prize would be a logical step if peace is maintained in Ukraine's east.

Merkel has transformed from being one of Kremlin's closest partners in Europe to being one of its staunchest opponents since the Kremlin annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March last year.

Merkel's frustration with Putin was evident during a speech, two days after meeting the Russian leader during G20 talks in Sydney. In unusually stark language, the German Chancellor accused Russia of trampling on international law with 'old thinking' based on spheres of influence.

"After the horror of the two world wars and the end of the Cold War, this calls into question the peaceful order in Europe," she said.

Merkel needn't start preparing for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony yet though – the winner won't be announced until mid-December.
