Bulgaria’s Ombudsman Calls for Common Food Production and Trade Directive

Maya Manolova

(October 12, 2017 Sofia) "A petition has been submitted in the European Parliament paving the way for new laws that will ensure equal common standards in food production across the EU," Bulgaria's Ombudsman Maya Manolova said ahead of the Bratislava Summit, dedicated to dual food quality standards.

"I shall insist on a new EU directive regulating food production and trade that bans the supply of foods of one and the same brand but of different quality. In case my request is disregarded, I am ready to launch a referendum in several EU member states, so as to protect the EU citizens' right to buy foods of guaranteed quality," Monolova said further.

Some international food producers profit from the fact that they are allowed to sell foods of one and the same brand at the same price in West Europe and in Bulgaria, but of inferior quality, because ingredients of the foods sold in Bulgaria are much cheaper.
