Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Calls for Better Road Infrastructure on the Balkans during Bosnia Visit

(Sofia, August 4, 2017) – "The lack of interconnectivity is a big problem for the Balkan countries – we need better roads, railway infrastructure, we need natural gas and electric grid interconnectors," Bulgaria's foreign minister Ekaterina Zaharieva told Bosnia's state TV channel BHRT.

As regards next year's Bulgarian presidency of the EU and the European perspective of the West Balkan countries, which is said to be its top priority, Mrs. Zaharieva said that Bulgaria's efforts in this direction would be insufficient, if those countries' governments disregard the recommendations of Brussels regarding certain reforms that they need to implement.

Yet, she expressed optimism about the regions European perspective, owing to the countries' enthusiasm to step up the necessary reforms and implement them as soon as possible.

"I'd like to assure all West Balkan leaders that they can rely on Bulgaria's support with regard to the European integration of their countries. I have been Bulgaria's foreign minister for only three months now, but I am on this regional shuttle, because I want to visit all West Balkan countries and hear their aspirations to become part of the European family," she said.
