Bulgarians Consider Themselves Well-off with BGN 1,000 per Month

This is what the richest 10% of the population can afford to eat.

(October 16, 2017 Sofia) - Wealthy Bulgarians eat less bread, but significantly more fruit, vegetables and meat than their poor fellow citizens, according to a recent survey of the National Statistics Institute (NSI) on the living standard in Bulgaria.

In Bulgaria, the middle class is about 10% of the population and has an annual income of BGN 12, 977 which makes BGN 1,081 per month.

The amount is quite small compared to the average salary for the country, which is already over BGN 1,000. But the reason for this is that all family wages, pensions and other income are shared among the household members.

Thus, even if one person has a high salary, but they are supporting a child, an unemployed, or a pensioner in the family,, the average income of the household per person falls significantly.

For comparison, the poorest 10% of the Bulgarians survived 2016 on BGN 1,694, or the meagre BGN 141 per month, the survey reads further.
