Bulgaria Sets Higher Excise Duties on Tobacco Products

As of January 1st 2017, Bulgaria is introducing higher excise duties on cigarettes and tobacco products.


As a result, retail price on the most popular brands is expected to increase by about 0.15 lev per pack.
Batches of cheaper cigarettes are still available in the shops across the country.


Until recently, the excise duty on cigarettes was formed as follows: BGN 70 per 1,000 pieces, plus 38% of the retail prices, but not less than BGN 161 per 1,000 pieces.


From January 1st onwards, the formula is 101 BGN per 1,000 pieces, plus 27% of the retail price, but not less than BGN 168 per 1,000 pieces.
